May 2016
SPARTA President’s Corner
contributed by Randy Springs
Hopefully, the start of May brings some relief from the pollen buildup in the area. Some sustained rain to wash it all way would be nice, but not like they saw in Houston last week. As we start planning vacations and time off, our jobs continue to require us to keep up with new technology and new IT solutions. Last month, on his birthday, Ed Webb updated us on his experiences and knowledge gained at SHARE in San Antonio in early March. Thanks, Ed, for another great update.
Our IBM speaker for May had to cancel at the last minute, but we have a webcast scheduled with Phil Smith of HP Enterprise Data Security (formerly Voltage Software) who will speak to us on data and email security challenges facing our industry today.
Plan to come at 6:15 for pizza and dessert at LabCorp on Tuesday, May 3.

Remember DOS/VSE - It's Still Going in z/VSE V6!
contributed by Ed Webb
Imagine my surprise to see this announcement from IBM on April 12, 2016.
"IBM® z/VSE® V6.1 and IBM CICS® Transaction Server (CICS TS) for z/VSE V2.1 have been generally available since November 27, 2015. z/VSE V6.1 provides new functionality as well as infrastructure enhancements for exploitation in future releases."
And look at these functions in the IBM z13 that it can use:
"z/VSE Network Appliance using the z Appliance Container Infrastructure (zACI):
It builds on the Linux Fast Path (LFP) function and is available in an LPAR environment and thus extends the z/VSE - z/VM® IP Assist (VIA®) function.
Configurable Crypto Express5S for data encryption and SSL acceleration.
FICON® Express16S supporting a link rate of 16 Gbps."
Learn more about the resilient z/VSE and its future in this IBM Announcement.

Linux on z Systems is Crucial in Health Insurance Enrollment
contributed by Ed Webb
"Imagine trying to fill a prescription at the pharmacy only to discover that, due to some unknown error in some faraway IT system, your health insurance coverage isn’t available. At best, this could be a minor frustration, but at worst it creates a serious medical hardship that puts policyholders at risk.
Access to care is one of many challenges on Mike Giglio’s plate. He’s a z/VM Systems Engineer at Healthplan Services, a Florida-based provider of sales, benefits administration and technology solutions to health insurance carriers. One of his major responsibilities involves implementing the technology that underpins federal and state health insurance exchanges, through which customers buy coverage.
The Affordable Care Act introduced the concept of exchanges as a way to enable insurance providers to sell coverage to individual consumers, rather than just employer groups. States can vote whether to implement their own exchange and in states without a marketplace, customers can buy coverage through the federal exchange or directly from a carrier."
See how Healthplan Services benefits all users of healthcare exchanges using its z Systems in this recent SHARE Blog entry.
Mainframes: A Technological Best Bet
contributed by Ed Webb
Bryan Smith, writing for Enterprise Systems Media, on April 18th says:
"I’ve seen a number of great technologies come and go. Some are fun for a while, as they are the first to market, such as game systems, entertainment devices and lifestyle products. But without staying ahead of the competition, they soon become irrelevant. Others simply don’t solve a big enough problem to warrant spending money to become an early adopter, such as Google Glass, Amazon’s Fire mobile phone or HD DVD.
How do you know when the time is right to invest in new technology? For personal technology, if you’re like me, you’ll forever be an early adopter and likely always be first in line for the next iPhone or Android device—even if the existing one works perfectly fine. But if you’re committing thousands and thousands of dollars of your company’s limited IT resources, how do you know what you’re buying today will be still be the best technology five years from now—or even next year?
I’ve long been an advocate of the mainframe. Pundits (and competitors) have predicted its demise for decades, but this powerhouse technology is as critical and as sure of an investment today as when the first models were introduced more than 50 years ago. The mainframe of today has several characteristics that make this investment a sound one for years to come."
See what Bryan thinks are the characteristics that make the mainframe a sound investment here.
