SPARTA President’s Corner
contributed by Ron Pimblett
I want to thank Randy Springs of BB&T for running our April
session with Ed Webb presenting Share updates from his recent
Seattle trip.
May 11th to May 18th is the IBM EDGE technical infrastructure
training symposium at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Edge2015, is a
multifaceted event culminating in a best-in-class Executive
Summit and three Technical Universities: Storage Systems, z
Systems and Power Systems. Business luminaries will share best
practices on how they have used new technologies, like mobile,
to target new customers to create new revenue streams or how
they created more secure environments for themselves and their
customers.
There is an interesting article in Forbes by Peter Cohen about “
IBM being a Merger prospect for Apple". Highly unlikely but here
are his comments:
"Could a growing company that makes most of its money selling to
individuals in China breath life into a shrinking giant
that sells to enterprises?
If the acquirer is Apple and
the target is IBM,
the answer is maybe. And there are three reasons that such an
improbable merger might make sense.
Before getting into these reasons, it is worth pointing out that
such a deal would make Warren
Buffett smile. According to AP, he “believes that IBM will
be making more money ten years from now than it does today, and
IBM is repurchasing its stock aggressively so Berkshire’s share
of the company’s profits — [it owns 9% of IBM stock now]
will grow over time — [due to revenues from IBM's cloud
computing and corporate services].”
Whether that happens or not, Apple is becoming increasingly
dependent on demand in China for its eight year old iPhone line
— China is Apple’s biggest region and its sales soared 70%
there to $16.8
billion in the first three months of 2015 –
while IBM keeps getting smaller while promoting the hope that
the cloud — it invested $4 billion there, according to the Wall
Street Journal – will be its salvation.
During the same period, IBM’s revenue dropped 12% to $19.59
billion “as a surging U.S. dollar compounded the impact of
shrinking hardware sales. It was the company’s 12th straight
quarter of year-on-year declines,” according to the Journal.
Tim Cook knows IBM. Cook worked at IBM from 1982 to 1994. Cook
rose up the ranks at IBM and in his last job there he was “North
American Fulfillment director, managing manufacturing and
distribution functions for IBM’s Personal Computer Company in
both North and Latin America,”
In July 2014, IBM and Apple partnered “to deliver Apple
technology to big business,” according to the Wall
Street Journal. IBM has since developed software for
Apple’s iOS operating system, but it has been unclear how
important the relationship is to either company’s bottom line.
Last month, IBM and Apple announced a deal to get iPads
into the hands of elderly Japanese through Japan Post.
But so far, the IBM partnership has not boosted iPad sales which
tumbled 23% to 12.6 million in the first three months of 2015,
according to the Journal.
On April 30, Cook expressed optimism for the partnership,
noting “We want to change the way people work. There
are too many enterprises that are stuck in a different era.”
Apple can afford to make the buy.
I wonder what the new Apple/IBM Mainframe would look like ?
Our June 2 meeting speaker will be Thomas Meehan of Innovation
Software.
May’s meeting will highlight the IBM Omegamon ’s
new Systems Management Suite dashboards which will help IT
professionals to monitor complex workloads with one operations
console.

Systems zTidbitz
contributed by Ed Webb
"zTidbitz are a collection of condensed or summary information on a wide range of z/OS and System z hardware topics. You can think of them as "cheat sheets" or reference sheets in that they greatly condense considerably more product documentation. So they leave out a lot of detail and subtleties, but nevertheless, they can be very useful if you need a reminder or quick review of a topic area you are somewhat familiar with. Enjoy!"
And they mean condensed - check out this recent IOS and FICON PDF page:

How to Embrace the Hacker Culture for z/OS
contributed by Ed Webb
"Phil Young delivered 'The Security Gap' keynote at SHARE in Seattle on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015.
In 2012 a z/OS breach was discovered. Hackers in Cambodia had full control of a Swedish government’s mainframe for 3+ years. Using multiple different techniques they had learned on this breach they then preceded to breach bank & university mainframes. Culminating in trying to transfer one million dollars from Denmark to accounts in Cambodia. Very few people have heard about this outside of Denmark or Sweden, but in countries the mainframe, and IBM’s, security posture has come under fire. Many people believe this platform to be secure by default but that’s not always the case, and while the IT security world has grown, their knowledge of this platform has not kept up. Phil explains what you can do to help bridge the divide between the mainframe world and the security world, how to embrace hacker culture for the betterment of z/OS and what that community thinks of this ‘legacy’ system."

Web Enablement Toolkit for z/OS
contributed by Ed Webb
"[from] Stephen Warren [of IBM]:
The proliferation of web services applications utilizing the Internet in recent years has been staggering. RESTful applications using HTTP as a means of communication and sending JSON or XML data is as common as it gets in the mobile, client/server world. Wouldn't it be cool if your existing z/OS applications running in traditional environments could easily ramp up to play in the game as well through a set of base z/OS® services available to any program on z/OS? Enter the new z/OS Client Web Enablement toolkit! The toolkit enables these applications to more easily participate in this client/server space by providing a built-in:
• z/OS JSON parser to parse JSON text coming from any source and the ability to build new JSON text or add to existing JSON text
• z/OS HTTP/HTTPS protocol enabler using interfaces similar in nature to other industry-standard APIs.
Just about all environments on z/OS can avail themselves of these new services. Of particular interest are traditional z/OS programs running in native z/OS apart from either a z/OS UNIX® or Java® Virtual Machine (JVM) environment...."

Mensa Minds
contributed by Chris Blackshire
Some years ago, there was a Mensa convention in San
Francisco. Mensa, as you know, is a national
organization for people who have an IQ of 160 or
higher.
Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a
local cafe. When they sat down, one of them
discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper,
and their pepper shaker was full of salt.
How could they swap the contents of the two bottles
without spilling any, and using only the implements
at hand? Clearly--this was a job for Mensa minds.
The group debated the problem, and presented ideas
and finally, came up with a brilliant solution
involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer.
They called the waitress over, ready to dazzle her
with their solution.
"Ma'am," they said, "we couldn't help but notice
that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt
shaker has pepper." But before they could finish,
the waitress interrupted. "Oh -- sorry about that."
She leaned over the table, unscrewed the caps of
both bottles, and switched them. There was dead
silence at the Mensa table.
Proves that COMMON SENSE is still greater than
BRAINS!!
Understanding
Engineers
contributed by Chris Blackshire
Understanding Engineers #1
Two engineering students were biking across a
university campus when one said, "Where did you get
such a great bike?"
The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking
along yesterday, minding my own business, when a
beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to
the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take
what you want."
The first engineer nodded approvingly and said,
"Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have fit
you anyway. "
Understanding Engineers #2
To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the
pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer,
the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
Understanding Engineers #3
A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one
morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.
The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must
have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"
The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never
seen such inept golf!"
The priest said, "Here comes the greens-keeper.
Let's have a word with him. " He said, "Hello
George. What's wrong with that group ahead of us?
They're rather slow, aren't they?"
The greens-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group
of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our
clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let
them play for free anytime."
The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said,
"That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer
for them tonight."
The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my
ophthalmologist colleague and see if here's anything
she can do for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"
Understanding Engineers #4
What is the difference between mechanical engineers
and civil engineers? Mechanical engineers build
weapons. Civil engineers build targets.
Understanding Engineers #5
The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does
it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How
does it work?"
The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How
much will it cost?"
The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want
fries with that?"
Understanding Engineers #6
Three engineering students were gathered together
discussing who must have designed the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look
at all the joints."
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer.
The nervous system has many thousands of electrical
connections."
The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been
a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste
pipeline through a recreational area?"
Understanding Engineers #7
Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't
fix it.
Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't
have enough features yet.
Understanding Engineers #8
An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog
called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll
turn into a beautiful princess."
He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his
pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me,
I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay
with you for one week."
The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled
at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me
back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one
week and do anything you want."
Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it
and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've
told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay
with you for one week and do anything you want. Why
won't you kiss me?"
The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't
have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog - now
that's cool."
Understanding Engineers #9
Two Irish engineers were standing at the base of a
flagpole, looking at its top.
A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.
"We're supposed to find the height of this
flagpole," said one engineer, "but we don't have a
ladder."
The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a
couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the
ground. Then she took a tape measure from her
pocketbook, took a measurement, announced, "Twenty
one feet, six inches," and walked away.
The second engineer shook his head and laughed, "A
lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and
she gives us the length!"
