February 2015

SPARTA President’s Corner

contributed by Ron Pimblett

It’s a great pleasure for the SPARTA team to welcome in 2015 with our first meeting February 3rd  to be held at IBM. A new mainframe will be discussed and demonstrated. The IBM z13 with its large memory resources and focus on delivering mobile and cloud solutions is a new and exciting platform.

Last year our discussions focused on the new mobile capability for the Mainframe as well as improved operating tools like zAware and analytics.

Mobile devices are growing rapidly and will require access to data across the current and new application suites through new channels. Cloud computing is now being discussed as a given, featuring anything from Software as a server to full server deployment.  IBM z Enterprise has been at the forefront even before cloud computing entered the scene.

Looking forward to new speakers for the rest of the year our focus should encompass not only Analytics and management tools but also Data Security.  In fact, to senior executives this problem is keeping them up at night.  We need to highlight the incredible security of the mainframe and encompass other enterprise data solutions that will give management the “aha moments” to invest more in the mainframe infrastructure.

As we move forward, we must remember that it is not only important to stay apprised of new technology but also that SPARTA is an association to bring Mainframe Systems Programmers together to share their experiences and their questions during the year. Our mission is to promote the integrity and expertise of our members at all times.

See you on our new night (the first Tuesday of the month)
on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at IBM in RTP to hear about z System and the new IBM z13.

Key Functions in z/OS Version 2 Release 1

contributed by Ed Webb

"z/OS Version 2 Release 1 helps you minimize downtime and achieve higher performance and availability. But are you exploiting z/OS to the maximum benefit for your enterprise?

This IBM Redbooks publication focuses on some of the key features of z/OS. The focus is mainly on z/OS Version 2 Release 1, but key features from earlier releases are also covered. This book concentrates on enhancements in the areas of hardware support, communications, security, data management, batch modernization, and other selected z/OS functions.

Each chapter describes what a feature is and the value it can bring to your business. Use cases help illustrate how each feature can be used, and leading practices offer advise on how to best take advantage of each feature."

You can review the contents of this exploitation-oriented Redbook draft here.

Kevin Spacey: The new rock star of big data analytics?

contributed by Ed Webb

"Yes, I’m writing about that Kevin Spacey—the Academy Award winning actor known for his work in motion pictures like The Usual Suspects, American Beauty and L.A. Confidential.

Spacey’s portion of the session began pretty much as I expected, with lots of anecdotes and images from his career, a few nods to his mentor Jack Lemmon, the story of how he photo-bombed Ellen DeGeneres’ infamous selfie at the 2014 Oscars and a few salty f-bombs dropped here and there.

But then he put up a slide containing nothing but these words:

“Big data and analytics are empowering the rule breakers.”

And I started to pay closer attention.

The session rather abruptly shifted gears and began to address how data is being used to revolutionize the entertainment industry. Spacey talked about how the popular video streaming service, Netflix, mined the vast stores of information it captures from its subscribers’ viewing patterns and preferences to get into original programming.

Netflix’s first original series, House of Cards (starring Kevin Spacey, of course!), has been a huge hit because Netflix knew what their subscribers wanted. But the data also told Netflix to gamble on a new distribution model—making all episodes of a series available on the same day—a bet that has paid off in a substantial increase in the Netflix subscriber base."

Check out what else Kevin Spacey talked about in Paul DeMarzio's entry at the Smarter Computing Blog.

IBM’s z13 Redefines Mainframe Performance, Economics and Versatility

contributed by Ed Webb

"With the introduction of the new IBM z13, the latest revision of the 50-year old mainframe product line introduced today, it will be hard for IT people to persist in the mistaken belief that the mainframe can’t handle today’s workloads or that it is too expensive. Built around an 8 core, 22nm processor, the IBM z13’s 141 configurable cores (any mix of CP, IFL, zIIP, ICF, SAP) delivers a 40 percent total capacity improvement over the zEC12.

The IBM z13 will handle up to 8,000 virtual enterprise-grade Linux servers per system, more than 50 per core. Remember when Nationwide Insurance consolidated 3000 x86 servers mainly running Linux on a System z and saved $15 million over three years, a figure later revised considerably higher. With the IBM z13 Nationwide could consolidate more than twice the number of Linux servers at a lower cost and the resulting saving would be higher still."

IBM z Systems Job Connector Links Employers and Candidates
contributed by Ed Webb

"To address that need [for mainframers], the IBM z Systems Academic Initiative has just launched the IBM z Systems Job Connector website, a new tool to help link mainframe employers and candidates globally. The IBM z Systems Job Connector website has been designed to support employers and candidates interested in filling/finding enterprise computing jobs that require skills and familiarity with IBM z Systems mainframe technology.

This tool was previously known as the System z “jobs board” which has facilitated talent connections for the last four years with over 40,000 job views, 5,800 job seekers and 500 employers actively posting positions."

What Is Google doing to your brain?

By Andrew Braun, January 5, 2015 (contributed by Chris Blackshire)

It seems so far that this process is at least as mentally demanding as pre-internet methods of human information-gathering were—perhaps even more. So for now, it’s probably best to maintain a healthy balance. Hone your online reading skills and maintain your offline reading skills—but if you spend all weekend perusing online articles, don’t feel too bad about yourself. You’re just exercising some different brain muscles.

A Blonde and the Snow in Minneapolis

contributed by Chris Blackshire

A husband and wife in Minneapolis were listening to the radio during breakfast.

Then with the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied, "Why don't you just leave the car in the garage this time."
