How Will The Internet of Things Transform Your life?
The Internet of Things (IoT) will be shaping human life with
greater connectivity and ultimate functionality, and all this is
happening through networking to the Internet. It promises
to transform daily life, making it easier to work, travel, shop
and stay healthy. Thanks to billions of connected devices, there
is seemingly no limit to what can be connected to the Internet.
For example, toilets at London’s Heathrow Airport report on
their usage, a wireless collar for cows to wear, to check your
home video monitors, to help you avoid traffic jams as you
travel from work, smart toothbrushes, thermostats to commercial
drones, robotic companions for the elderly, web-connected TV,
personal robots, smart refrigerator, wearable fitness device,
portable heart or other health monitor, smart washing machine,
smart vacuum, utility smart meters, smart manufacturing assembly
floors, and many many more items, but you get the idea.
A combination of technologies, including low-cost sensors,
low-power processors, scalable cloud computing, and ubiquitous
wireless connectivity, has enabled this revolution. The
technology is exploding, with research firm IDC predicting that
smart, Internet-linked objects will number more than 200 billion
and generate in excess of $7 trillion in annual sales by 2020.
The concern that most people think about is the potential for
criminal misuse. Security from hacking becomes significantly
more challenging in a widely distributed and widely accessible
IoT. Traditional defense like firewalls and anti-virus software,
work to some degree in the internet we already understand but
are completely unsuited for protecting these new, easily
attackable entry points to the Internet.
Just what happens to the data spewed out by all these
interlinked machines is a deep concern shared by many security
researchers, legal authorities, government officials and
consumer advocates. They fear the information could be used to
skew our credit ratings, jack up our insurance rates, help
hackers steal our money, or enable spy agencies to compile
detailed dossiers on each of us. Moreover, they say, this vast
sea of data could be misused to put a high-tech twist on the
age-old curse of discrimination, with unscrupulous landlords or
employers excluding people based on the data they've secretly
acquired. It might also might alert your insurer if your car is
weaving when you head home and report your frequent drinking to
your boss. Or report speeding to the local police station.
Much of the data is expected to flow directly from the gadgets
to the businesses that made them. Legal experts say federal and
state laws poorly regulate how the information can be used, and
the companies already selling smart gadgets often are vague
about what they do with the data or whether they sell it to
others. Consequently, it's possible someone's personal details
could bounce around the Internet and be accessed by countless
people.
Such firms often say they "de-identify" the data so it can't be
attributed to individuals. Yet researchers have found it's
frequently possible to "re-identify" data by combining it with
other available facts. As a result, a White House report in May
concluded that data re-identification "creates substantial
uncertainty" about peoples' ability to control their personal
information.
We in IT need to look at its benefits while also making sure to
look at the risks and minimize them. We have to be part of the
process of making the Internet of Things something that helps
people and saves lives without damaging human rights.
You, as a consumer, need to be aware of the positive and
negative opportunities of buying/using these devices.
See you on our new night (the first Tuesday of the month)
on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at LabCorp in RTP to hear our own
Garry Grandlienard speak about System z in a Mobile World.

Key Functions in z/OS Version 2 Release 1
contributed by Ed Webb
"z/OS Version 2 Release 1 helps you minimize
downtime and achieve higher performance and availability. But
are you exploiting z/OS to the maximum benefit for your
enterprise?
This IBM Redbooks publication focuses on some of the key
features of z/OS. The focus is mainly on z/OS Version 2
Release 1, but key features from earlier releases are also
covered. This book concentrates on enhancements in the areas
of hardware support, communications, security, data
management, batch modernization, and other selected z/OS
functions.
Each chapter describes what a feature is and the value it can
bring to your business. Use cases help illustrate how each
feature can be used, and leading practices offer advise on how
to best take advantage of each feature."

Redbook draft here.

Three Quick Steps to
Prepare for a Transitioning Workforce
contributed by Ed Webb
"If you regularly read tech news you’ve likely seen a
host of complimentary articles, blog posts and
retrospectives surrounding the 50th anniversary of the
IBM mainframe. The positive recognition is well
deserved—and long overdue. As the primary computing
platform for financial institutions, insurance
companies, government agencies and telecoms, mainframes
help power our global economy. This fact alone should
hush any lingering predictions about the mainframe’s
demise once and for all—if it weren’t for one
troublesome trend: the retiring mainframe workforce.
Behind every mainframe are talented and experienced
developers who manage highly complex mainframe
applications. Thousands of these baby boomer developers
are expected to retire in the next five to 10 years,
taking both their platform knowledge and their
institutional knowledge with them. Fortunately, thus far
the retiring mainframe workforce issue has proved to be
a slow erosion over time rather than some type of
drastic drop off.
No matter where your company sits in that continuum,
here are three simple steps you can take to help reduce
the impact moving forward:”
Learn what the three steps are here.
Do You Really Want to
Know How Your VTS (Virtual Tape System) Works?
contributed by Ed Webb
"....
Anyway, there is a point to my
discussing my dyslexia here, and it relates to my
highly tuned ability to sniff out when people are
making stuff up to skirt around the fact that they
don't have a good answer to the questions you’re
asking them.
....
Today, after several years, I see many z/OS sites
rolling out Virtual Tape Servers (VTS). The
rationale behind these units is to move backup
tapes, which are an integral part of the z/OS
fabric, onto disk, where problems such as
inefficient tape usage can be managed without the
need to look at jobs that nobody has touched for
20 years.
....
If you listen to the folks pushing out VTS units,
you would think they are the magic bullet that can
rid the enterprise of the scourge of native tape
once and for all; the VTS is the “smoke and
mirrors” that allows tape to remain an integral
part of the z/OS fabric without having any tape.
It is the phenylalanine that allows you to drink
Coca-Cola all day without having to run for 10
miles after work to burn off the sugar calories."

Humor
Lawyers
contributed by Chris Blackshire
A very successful attorney parked his brand new
Porsche 911 Turbo in front of his office, ready to
show it off to his colleagues.
As he was getting out, a truck came barreling down
the road, drifted right and completely tore off
the driver's door. Fortunately, a cop was close
enough to see the accident and pulled up behind
the now door-less Porsche with his lights
flashing.
Before the cop had a chance to ask any questions,
the attorney started screaming hysterically about
how his precious Porsche, which he had just
purchased the day before, was completely ruined
and no matter how any car body shop tried to make
it new again, would never be the same.
After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant,
the cop shook his head in disbelief, "I can't
believe how materialistic you lawyers are," he
said, "you are so focused on your possessions that
you neglect the most important things in life."
"How can you say such a thing?" asked the lawyer.
The cop replied, "Don't you even realize that your
left arm is missing?
It was severed when the
truck hit you!"
"OH, MY GOD!" screamed the lawyer. . . "My Rolex
is gone!"
