Meetings

Meetings are scheduled for the last Tuesday evening of each month (except no meeting in December), with optional dinner at 6:15 p.m. and the meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m.

These monthly meetings usually are held at LabCorp’s Center for Molecular Biology and Pathology (CMBP) near the Research Triangle Park (see last page). Take I-40 to Miami Boulevard and go north. Turn right onto Alexander Drive. Go about a mile or so. Then turn right into LabCorp complex and turn Left to the CMBP Building. In the lobby, sign in as a visitor to see Tommy Thomas. Tommy will escort you to the conference room.

Call for Articles

If you have any ideas for speakers, presentations, newsletter articles, or are interested in taking part in a presentation, PLEASE contact one of the Board of Directors with your suggestions.

Minutes of the September 24, 2013 Meeting

•Meeting was called to order at 6:58 PM by Ron Pimblett, the Chapter Vice President.
•The meeting was held at LabCorp in RTP, N.C.
•Eleven (11) people were present of which ten (10) were members.
•Everyone in the room introduced themselves, told where they worked, and briefly described their job functions or their job hunting challenges.
•The minutes of the July 30, 2013 meeting were approved as published in the September 2013 newsletter. (There was no August newsletter for the DBAP baseball game outing.)
•Tommy Thomas, the Chapter Treasurer, gave the Treasurer's Report. As of September 13, 2013, the balance is $868.18. Motion was made and approved to accept the Treasurer's Report as published in the September 2013 newsletter.

OLD BUSINESS

•Articles are needed for this newsletter. If you would like to write an article for this newsletter, please contact Ed Webb. Keep in mind that you don't really need to write the article, it can be an article that you read that you would like to share with the membership.

•The SPARTA Web page is available. To access the SPARTA Web page, point your Web browser to this site: http://www.spartanc.org. Please send any comments or suggestions about the Web page to Mike Lockey. Be sure to check the Web page every once in a while to see any new or changed information.

•Ron Pimblett reminded everyone to leave the LabCorp conference room clean.

•The next SPARTA monthly meeting will be October 29 at LabCorp in RTP.

•Food for the October 29 meeting will be chicken.

•The 2013 dues are due ($30). Please see Tommy Thomas.

NEW BUSINESS

•Thanks to LabCorp (Tommy Thomas) for hosting the September meeting.

•Chris Blackshire continues to set up the SPARTA-RTP e-mailing list. From the 51 names on the SPARTA-L list that were sent e-mails to join the new SPARTA-RTP list, 39 people requested to be added to the SPARTA-RTP list. Currently, 31 people have responded to the join invite Emil and have been added to the new list, with 8 join invitations outstanding. Chris and Ron will be contacting these 8 people to get them on the list. There seems to be some confusion on the Yahoo join page in that you do not have to setup a Yahoo account to join the list. Just click on "join the mailing list instead" option.

•Send any e-mail address changes to Chris Blackshire so he can update the SPARTA-RTP Listserv (or send you an invitation to Join).

•Per Tommy, the bank was now charging $3 per month to copy any checks we would write and we are not writing any. The bank will drop this charging process. We will not be moving to another institution for the SPARTA checking account.

•Per Tommy, we need an alternate meeting room for meetings that Tommy can’t attend (Brad was the alternate). IBM suggested meeting at an IBM site when Tommy/LabCorp is not available.

•The business portion of the meeting ended at 7:45 p.m.

Phishing Scheme - Payroll Direct Deposit

contributed by Chris Blackshire

Chris’s Comment:
Being a college graduate, you may be targeted next: beware of solicitations to the alumni wanting personal information.

As always, beware of giving out personal information to people who contact you.

Hi Big10 Audit Directors,

I want to let everyone know about a recent phishing scheme targeted at the University of Michigan.  On July 19, a phishing Emil was sent to many faculty and staff.  The Emil looked as if it came from the university and requested verification of usernames and passwords.

Unfortunately, a number of people responded with their access credentials.  The stolen access information was then used to log into our employee HR self-service system and confidential information, such as W-2 forms and direct deposit bank account information was accessed. The direct deposit information for nine people was changed to an offshore bank account. In addition, the e-mail notifications sent to the employees to confirm a change to their direct deposit information were deleted.  By chance, not sound controls, the changes to the direct deposit information were detected prior to distribution of the payroll and no funds were diverted.

The attacks appear to have originated in Malaysia, and were routed through a VPN at the University of Florida.  We have contacted the University of South Florida and they have provided additional information about the attacks. They are working with the FBI to investigate similar activity that has occurred via their VPN service that has targeted other higher education institutions.

I don't mean to throw Tom under the bus, but it looks like Michigan State University may have had a similar attack...

FYI...It looks like these attackers are targeting higher education institutions

Fun With English

contributed by Chris Blackshire

For those who love the philosophy of ambiguity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of English, please enjoy and understand the following:

1. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.

2. Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

3. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

4. The main reason that Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.

5. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where’s the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

6. What if there were no hypothetical questions?

7. If a deaf child signs swear words, does his mother wash his hands with soap?

8. If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

9. Is there another word for synonym?

10. Where do forest rangers go to “get away from it all?”

11. What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?

12. If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages?

13. Would a fly without wings be called a walk?

14. Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will break-in and clean them?

15. If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

16. Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

17. If the police arrest a mute, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?

18. Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?

19. How do they get deer to cross the road only at those yellow road signs?

20. What was the best thing before sliced bread?

21. One nice thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people.

22. Does the little mermaid wear an algebra?

23. Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

24. How is it possible to have a civil war?

25. If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown too?

26. If you ate both pasta and antipasto, would you still be hungry?

27. If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

28. Whose cruel idea was it for the word “LISP” to have “S” in it?

29. Why are hemorrhoids called “hemorrhoids” instead of “assteroids"?

30. Why is it called tourist season if we can’t shoot at them?

31. Why is there an expiration date on sour cream?

32. If you spin an oriental man in a circle three times, does he become disoriented?
