July 2013
SPARTA Presidents Corner
Remembering Brad Carson
contributed by Ed Webb
I want to thank those SPARTA members who were able to attend Brad Carsons funeral in Tarboro last month. I was surprised to learn that Sam Knutson, now Vice President of Product Management for CA Technologies, and a Director at SHARE, also was there for Brad. Regrettably I could not be there; I was at my Mothers family reunion in Georgia.
Several times this past month I have thought I need to talk to Brad about this, only to remember a moment later that I cant. Its sad and frustrating to realize that his advice and counsel are not available at the other end of a phone call or e-mail.
At last months meeting, I took the opportunity to read the SHARE blog posting by Marna Walle (of IBM) about Brads passing. If you missed it, just take a look here.
Smitty (Paul Smith) and his team from IBM gave us a well-received presentation about the latest updates to Omegamon on z/OS. Check out the meeting notes later in this newsletter. We very much appreciated their efforts at a sad time for SPARTA.
One of our newest members, Elizabeth Stitt, has arranged for our speaker this month from GT Software. And well have some BarBQ as well at our meeting on July 30th at LabCorp in RTP. See you there.

Problem Solving with Consolidated Logs by Sandeep Perumbuduri
Application and Infrastructure Problem Diagnosis
- Operators and subject matter experts are overwhelmed with volumes of data that they manually process to determine the cause, location and scope of a problem.
- Only 3% of the data generated is operations orientated metric data
- 97% is made up of the unstructured/semi structured data
- A large enterprise with 5,000 servers can generate over 1.3 TB of data per day
- Too much data - timely analysis and problem solving assistance is needed to resolve issues
NetView for z/OS V6.1
- Problem Solving with Consolidated Logs (Canzlog)
- Browsing Logs Prior to NetView V6.1 = tedious
- Log Browse with NetView V6.1 and CANZLOG = much more useful
