SPARTA News June 2011

June 2011
SPARTA Presidents Corner
by Brad Carson
Here comes June and all the fun of the summer season, the start of hurricane (and I don't mean hockey) season, and the dreaded triple H's of Hazy, Hot and Humid. On top of that we are entering the driest time of the year and have to worry about brush and forest fires. I know that most of us in the triangle area have had a "whiff" of the big fire in the Alligator wildlife refuge still burning in eastern North Carolina. I don't know how many thousands of acres have been burned so far. When I was a volunteer fireman in PA these type of fires were the toughest to fight.
Last month our presentation was from Duane Reaugh, emeritus of DTS software. We were introduced to the work that DTS has done to integrate their software with the EMC (BusTech) MDL (or DLM). Their MCC product will provide a big benefit for customers of the MDL or DLM hardware. The savings of not having to convert to SMS managed tapes would be a big one in our case. As always the support from DTS has been better that most of the vendors that I deal with. With the advances in virtual tape processing we are all going to be addressing the issues that MCC was made for.
On the DB2 V10 migration here at LabCorp, we converted the first development DB2 (subsystem DBH) to compatibility mode. Initial testing has gone very well and we are planning to convert another subsystem to V10 before the end of the month. Since these particular DB2's are mainly used by web based applications, they didn't have to wait for the SCLM PLAN to PACKAGE work to be completed first. Of course we've had some (more) issues with the BMC DB2 utility suite and are working closely with them to iron out the issues. It's making me feel like we are a beta site for their DB2 utilities these days.
I've put my REXX hat back on to begin updating the SCLM execs involved with binding DB2 based applications (COBOL, CA:Gen, and Easytrieve). So far the big issue is getting the new package collection ID's straight and coming up with the correct code to match a DBRM to the proper collection. I've made some good headway here, but haven't had enough time to get much done. I guess someone needs to come up with the 28 hour day so I can do this along with all my other work. I should have more to tell you about next month.
This month Larry Green from IBM will talk to us about new version of Tivoli Netview that was announced last month. I look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp on the 28th.

Yes, youve missed the early registration discount but attending SHARE is still the most cost effective z/OS training you can buy. And the hotel rate at the WDW Dolphin is very good at $149 plus 12.5% tax.
Check out the schedule for SHARE in Orlando August 8-12, 2011 here.

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.
When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...'Goodnight , sleep tight'
It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them 'Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.'
It's where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's'
Many years ago, in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. 'Wet your whistle' is the phrase inspired by this practice.
