SPARTA News March 2011

March 2011
SPARTA Presidents Corner
by Brad Carson
Spring is here and now begins the annual rite of yellow pine pollen on everything. By this time next month my green truck will be yellow. Of course this also means it's time for "March Madness"! My wife is pulling for her UNC Tar Heels and I am just enjoying watching some good basketball.
Last month Monica Bennett and Brian Kithcart from BusTech/EMC visited with us to talk about their virtual tape solutions. We currently have a couple of the BusTech MAS (Mainframe Appliance for Storage) devices driving the "tape" archive for our ASG ViewDirect (MOBIUS) software. These are working very well for us and I have borrowed a few of those tapes to handle SPXTAPE dumps from our z/VM systems. Good solutions from a company based right here in the RTP area.
We are on our way with the migration to DB2 V10. We ordered the ServerPac just before I left for SHARE and it was ready for us to download on the 10th. This is the first time we've done a ServerPac via electronic delivery; since IBM doesn't support Oracle/Sun/STK 9840 format tapes, it's all we have available to us now. We are working with our DBA staff and source code management person to complete the migration from PLAN binds to PACKAGE binds for DB2 programs. It seems that V10 will not support PLANs that contain DBRM's at all. We're only about 15 years late on doing this conversion to packages; they've only been around since DB2 V2R3. It's going to take us about 10 months to get DB2 V10 to production so I'll keep you posted on our progress in the upcoming months.
A funny thing here is that we are also upgrading the DB software on our Unisys mainframe at the same time. Both DMS-1100 (like IDMS) and rDMS (like DB2) are being upgraded. Since these DB's only support one application the migration path is a lot shorter than the one for DB2, but no less involved.
This month Ed Webb and I will give you our "Trip Reports" from SHARE 116 in Anaheim. I look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp on the 29th.

Best Sessions at SHARE 2011 in Anaheim
contributed by Ed Webb
There were two sessions that I attended at SHARE in Anaheim earlier this month that stand out.
Glenn Anderson as usual did an excellent job presenting Session 9061: Understanding WebSphere App Server OEM Edition for z/OSMF Sysprogs. If you are new to WebSphere or installing z/OSMF, the information in this session is invaluable.
And of course a Bob Rogers session is always entertaining (just attending Bobs sessions at SHARE should be all the justification you need to to go back). This time the session you want to look for is 9063: How do you do what you do when you're a z196 CPU? Of course, live is much better so get your manager to buy the SHARE Online package so you can see and hear Bobs wit and erudition in addition to the good material.
Yet Another Java for z/OS
contributed by Ed Webb
There are now six variations of Java available for z/OS, seven if you kept an old copy of Java 1.4 laying around.
Because Oracle/Sun delayed Java 7, IBM decided to release Java 6.0.1 (31 and 64 bit flavors) so that a current Java could exploit the z196 processor. Now you can order Java 5 (31 and 64 bit), Java 6 (31 and 64), and Java 6.0.1 (31 and 64). Yes, the newest Javas for z/OS have new Product Numbers and FMIDs so they can be separately ordered from Java 6.
There are links from this IBM web page to Information sheets and from there to the announcements and how to get the new code. Both 6.0.1 variations are available now.
IBM BCPii is Easy to Setup on Your z10 or z196
contributed by Ed Webb
Check out Steve Warrens session from SHARE in Anaheim that explains what BCPii is and how to set it up. Best of all the presentation has HMC and Support Element screen shots so its hard to screw up.
BCPii is new in z/OS Release 11 and improved in R12. Its started automatically during IPL and, if not setup correctly, just quietly stops. But follow the steps that Steve outlines starting on Slide 41 in his presentation and youll have BCPii running in no time. Heres the link.
Of course, then theres the question of now I have BCPii, what do I do with it? Well figure that out later.

$5.37
contributed by Chris Blackshire
$5.37! That's what the kid behind the counter at Taco Bell said to me. I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and something that used to be a Jolly Rancher. Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back out to the truck to grab some change when the kid with the Elmo hairdo said the hardest thing anyone has ever said to me. He said, "It's OK. I'll just give you the senior citizen discount."
I turned to see who he was talking to and then heard the sound of change hitting the counter in front of me. "Only $4.68" he said cheerfully.
I stood there stupefied. I am 59, not even 60 yet? A mere child! Senior citizen?
I took my burrito and walked out to the truck wondering what was wrong with Elmo. Was he blind? As I sat in the truck, my blood began to boil. Old? Me?
I'll show him, I thought. I opened the door and headed back inside. I strode to the counter, and there he was waiting with a smile.
Before I could say a word, he held up something and jingled it in front of me, like I could be that easily distracted! What am I now? A toddler?
"Dude! Can't get too far without your car keys, eh?" I stared with utter disdain at the keys. I began to rationalize in my mind.
"Leaving keys behind hardly makes a man elderly! It could happen to anyone!"
I turned and headed back to the truck. I slipped the key into the ignition, but it wouldn't turn. What now? I checked my keys and tried another. Still nothing.
That's when I noticed the purple beads hanging from my rear view mirror. I had no purple beads hanging from my rear view mirror.
Then, a few other objects came into focus. The car seat in the back seat. Happy Meal toys spread all over the floorboard. A partially eaten doughnut on the dashboard.
Faster than you can say ginkgo biloba, I flew out of the alien vehicle.
Moments later I was speeding out of the parking lot, relieved to finally be leaving this nightmarish stop in my life. That is when I felt it, deep in the bowels of my stomach: hunger! My stomach growled and churned, and I reached to grab my burrito, only it was nowhere to be found.
I swung the truck around, gathered my courage, and strode back into the restaurant one final time. There Elmo stood, draped in youth and black nail
polish. All I could think was, "What is the world coming to?"
All I could say was, "Did I leave my food and drink in here"? At this point I was ready to ask a Boy Scout to help me back to my vehicle, and then go straight home and apply for Social Security benefits.
Elmo had no clue. I walked back out to the truck, and suddenly a young lad came up and tugged on my jeans to get my attention. He was holding up a drink and a bag. His mother explained, "I think you left this in my truck by mistake."
I took the food and drink from the little boy and sheepishly apologized.
She offered these kind words: "It's OK. My grandfather does stuff like this all the time."
All of this is to explain how I got a ticket doing 85 in a 40. Yes, I was racing some punk kid in a Toyota Prius. And no, I told the officer, I'm not too old to be driving this fast.
As I walked in the front door, my wife met me halfway down the hall. I handed her a bag of cold food and a $300 speeding ticket. I promptly sat in my rocking chair and covered up my legs with a blankey.
The good news was I had successfully found my way home.
Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list.
P.S. Save the earth...... It's the only planet with chocolate!!!!!
