October 2006

SPARTA President’s Corner

by Brad Carson

October and the leaves are starting to change and things are getting busy (if that's possible) here at LabCorp. I enjoyed the presentation last month from IBM about the goings on in RACF. I just wished we could have had a better turn out at SAS for the meeting. Like Ron Pimblett asks at every meeting, if any of us has an idea for a topic or speaker that you would like to have come to SPARTA, please contact him.

We are planning for one of our semi-annual DR tests here and will be recovering our Production LPAR to the system in Burlington. This will be our first time using Capacity Backup (CBU) on the z9-BC system. I'm looking forward to being able to turn off the CBU without doing a POR. I've also had some fun getting everyone used to the new Linux based HMC's and SE's on both systems. Looks like when they installed the Burlington system nobody cabled the HMC to the corporate net so we couldn't use remote access. Once that was done we found that someone else had used the IP address we had reserved for the HMC.

The other big thing I've been working on is related to our recently signed contract with United Health Care. We are planning on a change in our capacity model and then working on what type of hardware and/or software changes that need to be made to our systems and infrastructure. So it has been an interesting second month at LabCorp.

This month our speaker will be Shirley Barborak from IBM to talk to us about the latest in IBM tape technology. I look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp on the 24th.

P.S. Subs, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Humor

20 Lame Puns

contributed by Chris Blackshire

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

4. A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says:" A beer please, and one for the road."

6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to t he other: "Does this taste funny to you?"

7. "Doc, I can't stop singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home.'"
"That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome."
"Is it common?"
Well, "It's Not Unusual."

8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, "I was artificially inseminated this morning."
"I don't believe you," says Dolly. "It's true, no bull!" exclaims Daisy.

9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.

10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any.

12. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident.
He shouted, "Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs!"
The doctor replied, "I know you can't - I've cut off your arms!"

13. I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel.

14. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "Dam!".

16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse.
"But why," they asked, as they moved off.
"Because", he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

18. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet.
He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath.
This made him ..(Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good)..... A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

20. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh.
No pun in ten did.

How Job Classification Is Done ....

contributed by Chris Blackshire

See one that fits you?

Directions:

1. Put 100 bricks in some particular order in a room with a window.

2. Send 2 or 3 candidates into the room and close the door.

3. Come back after 6 hours and analyze the situation.

If they are counting the bricks, put them in Accounting.

If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing.

If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.

If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.

If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.

If they are sleeping, put them in Security.

If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology.

If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources.

If they say they have tried different combinations yet not a brick has been moved, put them in Sales.

If they have already left for the day, put them in Marketing.

If they are staring out of the window, put them in Strategic Planning.

Last but not least, if they are talking and bragging to each other and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in Top Management.
