SPARTA
PresidentÕs Corner
by
It just seems like yesterday that we held our January meeting. I enjoyed our
visit from Bob Spitz of Vanguard software. Since our group at DHTS is
responsible for RACF, I would love to install some of their products (the
University has the Administrator product), but we all know what budgets are
like this time of year. With the HIPAA requirements we have to follow, security
is becoming more and more of our workload.
The DHTS systems group has been busy monitoring our z/890 and the users have
been very pleased with the results. One surprise was that Model-204 has been
running much better; some of their batch times have reduced by 40%. WeÕve also
been busy converting some of the temporary license keys to permanent ones now
that the contracts have been ironed out. Now IÕm installing the next set of
updates to the BMC MainView suite we are running. BMC has made a big number of
infrastructure improvements and the Web interface (called Host Explorer) looks
a lot better. These updates will have us ready to begin work on CICS/TS 3.1 and
z/OS 1.7 soon.
As I mentioned during the last meeting, we have completed another DR test using
IBM BCRS in
Over at DDA IÕve been busy getting IBMÕs Fault Analyzer running on both of
their systems and in all the CICS regions. It has become quite handy along with
the Debug Tool for the developers when they are testing changes to the DDA code
or trying to debug problems with client modifications to their code. Since all
these are supplied on the ADCD built system, they might as well use them. On
another front IÕve setup two CICS regions for them to start development on
using the CICS WEB interface for their applications. Since the applications use
a VSAM file to store 3270 screens, it should not be too difficult to setup a
file/database to store a webpage instead. WeÕll see how this moves forward.
This month our speaker (and meal) will be supplied by Bill Peiffer from LRS. I
look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp on the 28th.
P.S. Subs, drinks, and dessert will be provided.
Time to pay your $20 annual dues!

The Spanish Computer
contributed by Chris Blackshire
A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English,
nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa."
"Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz."
A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male
and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether
"computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.
Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine
gender ("la computadora"), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later
retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half
your paycheck on accessories for it.
(THIS GETS BETTER!)
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine
("el computador"), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the
problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little
longer, you could have gotten a better model.
The women won.
