SPARTA Chapter President’s Corner

by Brad Carson

I want to thank Duane Reaugh and DTS Software for hosting our meeting last month on such short notice. We had to go with the change of venue last month because of the need for handling a conference call with Mike Bledsoe of Computer Associates. Mike gave us a presentation on the upcoming changes to CA-7 and the integration with CA's Workload Control Center. Mike managed to give a good presentation even with the added pressure of having to work around Hurricane Rita (he is based in Houston, Texas). In the future I can see us doing more of this style of presentation.

At DHTS our z/OS 1.6 system is settling in fine. We had a follow-up DR test on Oct. 7th, 8th, and 9th in order to complete the test that was halted back in August. This time we didn't send anyone up to Sterling Forest, just the tapes. After some initial connectivity issues we managed to get our part of the test completed in four and a half hours. This test was for 48 hours and we managed to restore all the DB2/IMS data this time (with only a few issues). The testing went well and included a side trip to the Rolling Stones concert on the evening of the 8th! Our PLI/LE conversion is still ongoing but has slowed down a little bit due to a manpower shortage for testing. We are now on track to convert the CICS regions on October 30th. Batch is being handled one job at a time and is moving forward.

Over at DDA I'm still working on setting up IMS 8.1 for their application but haven't had much time to work on it during the last month. I had to take a small detour to get V5.1 of the IBM Debug Tool running in batch and CICS. It can now handle assembler code as well as COBOL/PLI/C code. Now that Debug is running, I'll head back to working on IMS.

This month our speaker will be John Mycroft from Cobbs Mill Consulting to talk to us about DumpMarvel. I look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp on the 25th.

P.S. Be sure to ask for Tommy Thomas when you arrive at LabCorp. Subs, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Free z/OS Software - Get It Now!

contributed by Ed Webb

Two recent software products have been significantly updated and you should get both of them (they're free!):

PDS 8.6 takes a major step forward with PDS/Extended support. Now PDSE's are treated just like ordinary PDS's with a couple of minor restrictions. The Load Module MAP command cannot map Load Modules in a PDSE; it just reports size. HIST can show CSECTs though.

Download PDS 8.6 from http://www.cbttape.org/updates.htm now (it's file 182) and pick up the REVIEW command and its affiliates in file 134 while you're there.

SMP/E 3.4 (HMP1G00) is a very significant release and can be installed and run on z/OS 1.4 through 1.6 and is shipped as part of z/OS 1.7. You may have to license (no-charge) the separate product if you want it for your pre-1.7 system. Try ordering the CBPDO via ShopzSeries and if it wants to go to the Order Center instead of Manufacturing, call your IBM software rep (a third party like Mainline in our case) and get them to "license only (no ship)" your site. Once they confirm licensing, you should be able to order the CBPDO and download it via ShopzSeries.

With SMP/E 3.4, you can order your service directly from IBM via a RECEIVE ORDER job on your mainframe (firewall and security guys willing). There's a little bit of RACF Digital Certificate work to do (contact me directly for details; they're in the SMP/E 3.4 User's Guide as well) and you'll be RECEIVEing PTFs with almost no effort right away. It's a great way to keep RSU service at your fingertips on a scheduled basis.

One caution with SMP/E 3.4, you must also have IBM SDK for z/OS Java 2 Technology Edition, v1.4 (5655-I56) or an available ICSF crypto environment for the Internet Service Retrieval function to succeed. But Java 1.4 is free!

Can You Figure These Out?

contributed by Chris Blackshire

1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him?

2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?

3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away?

4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?

5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!

ANSWERS:

1. The third. Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead.

2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it and hung it up to dry.

3. Charcoal

4. Sure you can: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow!

5. The letter "e," which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph.

An Old Farmer’s Advice

contributed by Chris Blackshire

•Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight, and bull-strong.
•Keep skunks and bankers and lawyers at a distance.
•Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
•A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
•Words that soak into your ears are whispered ... not yelled.
•Meanness don't jes' happen overnight.
•Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads.
•Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
•It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.
•You cannot unsay a cruel word.
•Every path has a few puddles.
•When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
•The best sermons are lived, not preached.
•Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway.
•Don't judge folks by their relatives.
•Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
•Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.
•Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none.
•Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
•If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
•Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
•The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'.
•Always drink upstream from the herd.
•Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
•Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.
•If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.
•Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
