SPARTA News July 2005

July 2005
SPARTA Chapter Presidents Corner
by Brad Carson
The June meeting brought us a visit from Triangle Software so they could talk about their products. I was unable to attend this meeting because of a quickly scheduled vacation to the sea shore (oops, my Yankee is showing). It was a well deserved rest for both Martha and I. It was great to be walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ again. We haven't been there for seven years. As a very satisfied IOF user I would have liked to see what Triangle Systems has planned for the future. I hope one of you will fill me in on how their presentation went.
Our z/OS 1.6 migration at DHTS had a little setback; issues with BMC Control-M caused us to postpone our upgrade. Once we get Control-M and D running properly we will schedule another date. Right now that looks like it might be August 14th. With that out of the way I'm planning for another trip to Sterling Forest for our annual DR test. This will be a first test using stacked full volume dumps for all non database volumes. Our projections shows that this method should reduce our total restore time for the system. I'll let you know how it goes in next month's newsletter.
DDA's z/OS 1.6 system is running very stable and I've managed to get Version 5 of IBM's Debug Tool running in batch and CICS. Now I'm working on Fault Analyzer and then working with IMS. I've also had to put my DBA hat on to do some work with DB2 data design. It's always something to keep me busy.
This month our speaker will be our own Duane Reaugh from DTS Software to provide an overview of their SCC-Explorer product. I look forward to seeing you all at LabCorp in RTP on the 26th.
P.S. Be sure to ask for Tommy Thomas when you arrive at LabCorp. BarBQ, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Use of ICE on Mobile Phones
by Chris Blackshire
Heres an idea:
Following the recent disaster in London, East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency ( ICE )" campaign.
The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you
would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".
In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them.
It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do.
Please will you also e-mail this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about
this.
It really could help the emergency services in doing their job.
For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

If My Body Were A Car
contributed by Chris Blackshire
If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull, but that's not the worst of it.
My fenders are too wide to be considered stylish. They were once as sleek as a little MG, now they look more like an old Buick. My seat cushions have split open at the seams. My seats are sagging. Seat belts? I gave up all belts when Krispy Kremes opened a shop in my neighborhood!!
Air bag's?? Forget it. The only bags I have these days are under my eyes. Not counting the saddlebags, of course.
I have soooooo many miles on my odometer. Sure, I've been many places and seen many things, but when's the last time an appraiser factored life experiences against depreciation?
My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close.
My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently.
But here's the worst of it .. almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!!
City Boys
Contributed by Chris Blackshire
A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.
The next day the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died." "Kenny replied, "Well then, just give me my money back." The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already." Kenny said, "OK then, just unload the donkey." The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?" Kenny said, "I'm going to raffle him off." The farmer said, " You can't raffle off a dead donkey!" Kenny answered, "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he is dead."
A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?" Kenny said, "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $898.00." Farmer said, "Didn't anyone complain?" Kenny answered, "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back. "
Kenny grew up and eventually became the chairman of Enron.
The Taxi Driver
Contributed by Chris Blackshire
A passenger in a taxi tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something.
The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window.
For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, then the driver said, "Please, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me."
The passenger, who was also frightened, apologized and said he didn't realize that a tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much, to which the driver replied, "I'm sorry, it's really not your fault at all. Today is my first day driving a cab, I have been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.
