July 2000
SPARTA Chapter Presidents Corner
- by Chris Blackshire
Nortel Networks computer facilities has been having failures with their UPS systems. The first failure was in March, another in April, and now another one today July 16th. In each of our failures, the UPS systems were supposed to switch to "dirty" power with no outages. The failure in April resulted in a replacement of that unit. The March repair resulted in a failure of that unit again today. I would like to know what types of UPS systems the other members are using and what types of failures you are having, if any. Previous to these failures, the UPS have been very reliable. Please come prepared with information about what type of UPS you are using and your failure rates. I am also interested in how you test your UPS systems and how often you test them.
I didn't hear much from the members about the Myers-Briggs introduction that I did last month. If this sparked some interest, I was thinking that we could have a speaker and/or facilitator some month that would teach us more about M-B and maybe do a group evaluation. Let John or me know if you are interested.
The next meeting is on Tuesday July 25th at LabCorp. Either BBQ or subs will be provided along with drinks and dessert. The BBQ depends if I can find a BBQ place close to RTP that can provide it.

Items of Interest
SHARE Opposes UCITA
contributed by Ed Webb
Excerpts from a recent SHARE e-mail:
SHARE Inc. is opposing the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) as proposed by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law (NCCUSL). While SHARE supports the intent to provide uniform commercial codes that protect intellectual property rights, the organization believes that the UCITA legislation, in its current form, will have significant negative impact on SHARE member organizations, SHAREs ability to pursue its mission, and the technology consumer community at large.
Should the UCITA legislation pass in its current form, software users may be negatively affected in several ways. Potential ramifications include: vendors being empowered to disable code remotely; decreased liability for vendors that distribute products with known defects; vendors being exempted from public criticism and impediments made to open dialogue regarding competitive products - a key SHARE activity.
Please visit http://www.share.org/UCITA.html to learn more about SHAREs position and for links to other resources regarding UCITA. Also located at this site is an electronic discussion forum that SHARE has established for members and the public at-large to discuss UCITA.
Please pass this information along to your IT colleagues, encourage them to visit Web: http://www.share.org, and advocate opposition to UCITA.
SCMG in RTP in September
contributed by Duane Reaugh
The Southern Computer Measurement Group will hold its Fall 2000 Conference at the Holiday Inn in Research Triangle Park, NC on September 28 and 29, 2000. This is the same hotel we have used for the last several fall conferences.
We are currently putting together the agenda, and would like to hear from anyone who is interested in sharing their experience by giving a presentation. There are countless benefits to presenting: it gives you broader exposure in the IT community, develops and sharpens important professional skills, and gives an opportunity to research a topic of interest to you. Admission for conference presenters is free.
We generally run dual tracks at the conference, one for mainframe topics and one for other topics such as distributed systems and networking. ... Even if your topic (is not an obvious fit), we encourage you to submit it for consideration. We would like to have tutorial, technical, management, and user experience sessions....

Andy Roony on Everything
contributed by Chris Blackshire
Have you ever noticed...
that they put advertisements in with your bills now? Like bills arent distasteful enough, they have to stuff junk mail in there with them. I get back at them. I put garbage in with my check when I mail it in. Coffee grinds, banana peels... I write, Could you throw this away for me? Thank You.
On Fabric Softener:
My wife uses fabric softener. I never knew what that stuff was for. Then I noticed women coming up to me (sniff) Married (walk off). Thats how they mark their territory. You can take off the ring, but its hard to get that April fresh scent out of your clothes.
On Cripes:
My wifes from the Midwest. Very nice people there. Very wholesome. They use words like Cripes. For Cripes sake. Who would that be, Jesus Cripes? The son of Gosh of the church of Holy Moly? Im not making fun of it. You think I wanna burn in Heck?
On Morning Differences:
Men and women are different in the morning. The men wake up aroused in the morning. We cant help it. We just wake up and we want you. And the women are thinking, How can he want me the way I look in the morning? Its because we cant see you. We have no blood anywhere near our optic nerve.
On Pregnancy:
Its weird when pregnant women feel the baby kicking. They say, Oh my God. Hes kicking. Do you wanna feel it? I always feel awkward reaching over there. Come on! Its weird to ask someone to feel your stomach. I dont do that when I have gas. Oh my God...give me your hand...It wont be long now....
On Grandma:
My grandmother has a bumper sticker on her car that says, Sexy Senior Citizen. You dont want to think of your grandmother that way, do you? Out entering wet shawl contests. Makes you wonder where she got that dollar she gave you for your birthday.
On Prisons:
Did you know that it costs forty-thousand dollars a year to house each prisoner? Jeez, for forty-thousand bucks a piece, Ill take a few prisoners into my house. I live in Los Angeles. I already have bars on the windows. I dont think we should give free room and board to criminals. I think they should have to run twelve hours a day on a treadmill and generate electricity. And if they dont want to run, they can rest in the chair thats hooked up to the generator.
On Award Shows:
Can you believe how many award shows they have now? They have awards for commercials. The Cleo Awards, a whole show full of commercials. I taped it and then I fast-forwarded through the whole thing.
On Phone-In-Polls:
You know those shows where people call in and vote on different issues? Did you ever notice theres always like 18% that say I dont know. It costs 90 cents to call up and vote... Theyre voting I dont know. Honey, I feel very strongly about this. Give me the phone. (Into Phone) I DONT KNOW! (Hangs up looking proud.) Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe youre not sure about. This guy probably calls up phone sex girls for $2.95 to say Im not in the mood.
On Answering Machine:
Did you ever hear one of these corny, positive messages on someones answering machine? Hi, its a great day and Im out enjoying it right now. I hope you are too. The thought for the day is Share the love. Beep. Uh, yeah...this is the VD clinic calling....Speaking of being positive, your test is back. Stop sharing the love.
