June 2000
SPARTA Chapter Presidents Corner
- by Chris Blackshire
I am attending management training classes where I am learning to be a better manager. One way to be a better manager is to recognize peoples different personality traits and how to best work with a person who has those tendencies.
How many of you have heard of the Myers-Briggs personality preferences? They are a set of 4 characteristics that have 2 types for each tendency. The tendencies are:
E-I Extraversion Introversion Where do you get your energy?
S-N Sensing iNtuition How do you take in information?
T-F Thinking Feeling How do you make decisions?
J-P Judging Perceiving How do you orient toward the outer world?
People who prefer Extraversion tend to focus on the outer world of people and things. People who prefer Introversion tend to focus on the inner world of ideas and impressions.
People who prefer Sensing tend to focus on the present and on concrete information gained from their senses. People who prefer iNtuition tend to focus on the future, with a view toward pattern and possibilities.
People who prefer Thinking tend to base their decisions on logic and on objective analysis of cause and effect. People who prefer Feeling tend to base their decisions primarily on values and on subjective evaluation of person-centered concerns.
People who prefer Judging tend to like a planned and organized approach to life and prefer to have things settled. People who prefer Perceiving tend to like a flexible and spontaneous approach to life and prefer to keep their options open.
Would you believe that most technical people are ISTJ?
The next meeting is on Tuesday June 27th at LabCorp. Pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Treasurers Report for May 2000
contributed by Duane Reaugh
I have put the Sparta books in Quicken and have entered all the transactions starting with Feb 1, 2000 since that is the oldest statement I have. There is one check for $45.95 that has not cleared according to the checkbook but it was for 11/30/99 so I am not sure. Anyway, with that check, the check written last night, and the deposit for the two members, the balance is $418.65.

On Wednesday, May 31, 2000, Vanguard Integrity Professionals issued a Security Alert for OS/390. A RACF Auditors tool was posted in the clear on the Internet. The tool could expose passwords and userids in a RACF database. For details and free code to combat use of the tool (which has been removed from the net), see http://www.go2vanguard.com/os390alert.cfm

Excerpts from a recent SHARE e-mail:
SHARE in Boston, July 23-28, is less than (one month) away. In addition to SHARE's traditionally robust technical agenda and a great host city, the event will feature an optional Security/Privacy Health Check Workshop on Thursday, July 27. For a modest additional registration fee, you can attend this Workshop that will present the latest information on securing your e-business and how to perform a security assessment within your enterprise. Workshop attendance is limited and advance registration is strongly recommended. Deeply discounted early-bird registration rates for both the Security Workshop and SHARE in Boston are available until June 6 (other discounts available until July 6). For the latest information or to register online, visit http://www.shareinboston.org/boston.
