April 2000

SPARTA Chapter President’s Corner

- by Chris Blackshire

In the February 2000 meeting, I announced that after 4 years of being your SPARTA president, I would like to turn it over to someone else. As I have not been able to get a new presidential candidate, here is the 2000-2001 slate of candidates:

President - Chris Blackshire
Vice President - John Bryant
Secretary - Mike Lockey
Treasurer - Duane Reaugh
Communications - Ed Webb

Elections will be at the April meeting and the new officers will take over in May.

The feedback from web publishing the newsletter was very positive and we will continue with only an electronic version.

Next meeting is on Tuesday April 25th at LabCorp. BarBQ, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Meetings

Meetings are scheduled for the last Tuesday evening of each month (except no meeting in December), with optional dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m.

These monthly meetings are held at LabCorp’s Center for Molecular Biology and Pathology (CMBP) near the Research Triangle Park (see last page). Take I-40 to Miami Boulevard and go north. Turn right onto Alexander Drive. Go about a mile or so. Then turn right into LabCorp complex and turn Left to the CMBP Building. In the lobby, sign in as a visitor to see Brad Carson. Brad will escort you to the conference room.

Call for Articles

If you have any ideas for speakers, presentations, newsletter articles, or are interested in taking part in a presentation, PLEASE contact one of the Board of Directors with your suggestions.

Newsletter Mailings

The SPARTA chapter policy is to mail a copy of the monthly chapter newsletter to each SPARTA member, NaSPA national, each advertiser, persons who have requested a copy, and to other chapters who send us a copy of their newsletter. The newsletter is mailed about the 20th of each month so you can prepare for the meeting. The mailing list is maintained by Mike Lockey at (336) 412-6235; if you have corrections or problems receiving your newsletter, call Mike.

New 1999 CBT Tape

Brad Carson now has copies of version 421 dated August 1999 of the CBT tape. Brad brings cartridges to each meeting and swaps a scratch cartridge for a copy of the CBT. If you need a round tape, contact Brad at LabCorp (Brad_Carson@labcorp.com or 336-436-4065) for details on sending a tape to LabCorp.

The new CBT tape is also available from www.cbttape.org.

SMFDUMP Utility Needs a Fix

contributed by Ed Webb

We found an error in the CBIPO/ServerPac SMFDUMP utility in our migration to OS/390 R8. Here’s the code correction just after the second (yes, second) DEQDONE label:

* Following line commented by @02 change
* WTO TEXT=(MSG1,MSG2),MF=(E,MSG007) ISSUE MSG @D7C
WTO TEXT=((MSG1,),(MSG2,)),MF=(E,MSG007) @02

Basically there need to be some additional parentheses in this multi-line WTO, or it will not assemble correctly in OS/390 R8 (and will not give you an obvious error - there’s a zero code MNOTE but unless you look you’ll never see it).

Check the Assembler Services Reference book for V1R3 to be sure the syntax is correct at V1R3 (we only have OS/390 V2 books online).

Be Careful What You Ask For

contributed by Ed Webb

(Ed. note: Here’s are excerpts from a recent note from IBM to a SHARE presenter)

....
I am with the ISPF development group in RTP, NC. I received an excerpt from your “OS/390 R8 Experience” presentation that you gave at SHARE earlier this month concerning the ISPF Configuration Table and your concern about not being able to install the configuration as an SMP/E USERMOD. We are adding the option to build the configuration keyword source file and load module(s) into an SMP/E USERMOD via APAR OW43412. Coding is complete and we are in the final test phase so a PTF should be available in the near future. This should address your requirement to install and maintain the configuration table with SMP/E. The keyword source is included in the USERMOD so that the source and load module are ‘in sync’ in the target libraries. ....

Feel free to pass this information along to anyone who you think may be interested.

If Operating Systems Ran the Airlines

contributed by Ed Webb

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing nonstop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth takeoff. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"
